New poster, just binged the podcast in 24 hours. I went to school with one of the Stewarts so I was familiar with the case and had done my own research prior to hearing about the show. Freddie is doing a great job. After listening to S2E1 I can't come to any conclusion other than the MPD covering something up. At first I was willing to believe they were just incompetent with all the irregularities they failed to deal with in the initial investigation. I was willing to give them the benefit of the doubt, being a smaller department with less resources that probably doesn't encounter this kind of crime often. But after the threat from the mother-in-law, the fact that she hasn't been brought in to be questioned or otherwise dealt with more by the MPD is damning. They know more than they've told the public. They wouldn't still have the case open and not let outside groups see more information 9 years later if they were actually trying to solve it. There has to be some kind of small-town politics at play here. freddie, did you end up passing that voicemail along to the police? I'm assuming you have it recorded. There's only 3 possibilities here. 1. They know about the threat and have done nothing. 2. They know and have further talked to the MIL, and we just don't know it. Or 3, Freddie made it up, which I have no reason to believe. But something is amiss here.

Given all of the investigations in the department over the years and all of the drama, it wouldn't be a huge leap into corruption. Even to this day, with the current police chief(who was not the chief until 2016)on leave due to accusations of a hostile work environment, there are rumors that point to a good old boy network of corruption. I've heard more than one person talk about how the racist, good old local boy network of cops who may or may not have gone completely by the book in the past factors into the accusations of a hostile work environment. The Chief Williams came in and has had a hand in bringing diversity and new(not local) blood into the Mooresville PD and that the not so clean local boys have had to tow the line, and they weren't happy with it, so this is a big push to get him out. These are all rumors but adding it to things that happened 5-10+ years ago, their handling of crimes like this, the recent killing of one of their own and the very tight lipped answers that came out of that "investigation"(and the one reporter who tried to go after answers there was threatened online, over social media, over the phone, until he gave up seeking information) it makes you go hmmmmm.
