I have been to the house and scoped out the neighborhood. There is a direct exit to a main road within 300 yards of the back door of the house. However, no random person would enter the back of these houses from that direction. As it is a steep hill with some trees. Most likely, if it was a random person, they would have been checking homes from the front side. There are countless homes lining the street all facing the same direction. I don't think they would have went into the back yard as the houses are very segmented.
This was not a random act of violence.

Could it have been random? It's possible, but seems unlikely... and almost impossible that it was Burris if that's the serial killer you were referring to. Remember, for it to be Burris it would have been his first known murder, and with a different weapon and attack style than he used for any of the other killings. Also, Mooresville PD were documented as saying that Burris had been eliminated as a suspect.
Could it have been some other random killer? Again, possibly... but it does seem like Matt was personally targeted by the murderer who used two different guns and a knife on him, while largely ignoring the woman fleeing from the scene, and not doing anything to the child still left unattended in the house across the hall. There is no evidence, as far as I've heard, to suggest that anything was taken from the house. The killer's sole motive appears to have been to make sure that Matt was dead and then get out quickly.
I've been through the neighborhood and came away with a very different impression of the situation than I had from looking at maps. I once thought that there was a good chance that a person might travel behind the houses and into the woods, possibly even going around to the back side of the neighborhood to escape... but those distances are much longer than they feel online. There's no report of a car on the street fleeing the scene, despite a neighbor (who had just let Angel in) almost definitely watching the street for their own safety. I think it's most likely that someone came over (or at the minimum, left the scene) over the hill in the back as Batman suggested above. It would be very unlikely that anyone canvassing the neighborhood trying doors would get as far as the Stewart house. It's a long way in by any method other than over that hill.
I don't know how they weren't spotted on the other side of the hill, though. It's fairly open and there are multiple houses there. I can't imagine where the getaway vehicle was.

If you know the neighborhood random is the last thing this was. Matt's home was closer to the end of Shephard Hill. There are so many homes all in the neighborhood closer to an in and out. Matt was the target. Why would a mother not run to the neighbor, tell them to call 911 and run back inside for her daughter. If I knew a stranger was in the house and I was able to get someone to call 911 I would go right back in,after knowing that the youngest was ok, and get my 3yr old daughter. I would never have left my husband and child in the 1st place.

I could buy the random invasion on the grounds that the intruder tried houses until finding an unlocked door. It would make sense to go to back doors because you could be spotted going door to door in the front, while the back doors are pretty concealed. I know lately Mooresville has had issues with car break ins and those thieves go from car to car in subdivisions, checking to see if one is unlocked. If the car is locked, they move on, no smashing and grabbing. But there are too many red flags that seem to rule it out. From the murderer letting Angel flee while spending a lot of time making sure Matt was good and dead. Nothing was missing from the home to indicate a robbery. The serial killer you mentioned was fueled by drugs and stole things from the people he killed to sell for drug money. That wasn't the case here. That killer also left behind no witnesses, even killing a 15 year old girl. I doubt he would have let Angel flee. Also, completely different MO, different caliber of bullets, different styles of killings. So while yes, a random home invasion is possible and hasn't been unproven, but there are so many things that point to it being something else.
