I was really confused about this. Then when I heard Big Country was apprehended night of July 4-5... Matt was murdered June 9. In my not North Carolina neighborhood the instant home fireworks hit the convenience stores early June kids are setting them off. Which might explain how neighbors might sleep through it and dogs would ignore it. Just maybe.
Also, maybe the dog that went crazy at, was it 12:15 prior to the event, is it possible this is when the shots were fired, that's what triggered dog, and she was in the house for a while before her flight, and possibly doesn't remember how long she was there because of the trauma or other reason?
Murderer(s) could have entered through unlocked front door and exited through sliding back door.
Maybe Matt didn't have anything shady in recent past, but what if someone in a religious fervor admitted something to him, like child abuse or something similar, then changed mind and knew Matt knew?
Just stuff I thought about while binge listening to podcast about this murder.

Which might explain how neighbors might sleep through it and dogs would ignore it. Just maybe. I hadn't thought about the fireworks angle... that's an interesting thought, although it would have been odd to hear fireworks so early. There are permanent stores that sell them year round in NC and SC, so there isn't really a 'season' where they start to ramp up like that. I would think that people, even thinking they were fireworks, would have retroactively realized what they had actually heard once they learned of the murder, though. My only thoughts on how the noise of the shots might have gone unnoticed is if people had their AC and fans going, which was certainly possible. We have reason to believe that they were running that box fan in the room, likely in addition to the AC. It was mid to high 80s outside that day, and although the temperature would have come down a lot outside, some of these NC houses hold that heat better than they should. It wouldn't have been cool enough that open windows would have made sense. On the other hand, the people I've talked to about the calibers involved seem to think those shots would have been LOUD. I wonder if that specialized Pow'r Ball ammo that was used in one of the guns was subsonic... that could make a big difference, too. That dog was nowhere near the Stewart home, so if adjacent neighbors didn't hear it's unlikely this dog did... but anything is possible. Could things have happened earlier and Angel didn't flee the house immediately? Potentially, yes. If we go with the theory of two attackers, then it definitely calls into question the whole narrative of that night. A key question to this would then be the exact time of Angel getting shot. At the time she ran down the driveway, she was still dripping blood from her injury. If she had been shot in the conflict but it had happened earlier, there should be a lot more of her blood around the house, I would think. Of course, we don't know if there was or not. Also, just trying to imagine the moment right after the shots rang out, I can't see someone staying around and hoping that they weren't heard. You'd go into action immediately, wouldn't you?

In Mooresville, fireworks are not sold year around, but are sold the couple weeks before the 4th of July, memorial day, and Newyear's eve.The fireworks angle is not something I have thought of before either, but is interesting.
