More than nine years ago, Matthew Stewart lost his life in a brutal attack in his own home. No one has ever been brought to justice, or even been put forward as an official suspect, for this horrific crime. Think about that for a moment: Nine years!
It doesn't matter who you think was responsible, or what your connection is to the case. It doesn't matter what you think of these forums or your opinion of the Unforgotten podcast. The fact remains that after all of this time, this case is still open with little more information being publicly available than there was at the time of the murder. Both the Mooresville Police Department and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation have open files on this case, but there's no reason to believe that any progress has been made in years. This is not meant to suggest or imply that either of these institutions have done anything but their very best to solve this case, it's only an acknowledgement that what they've done so far has clearly not been enough to bring closure.
It's time for fresh eyes to be given access to the police files in this case. This can take the form of assigning new investigators within these institutions, bringing in outside specialist groups to look at the case, declaring the case 'cold' and allowing other investigators access to the files, releasing information to the public in an attempt to crowd source new leads, or any number of other options.
How can you help? You help by making the Mayor and the Board of Commissioners of Mooresville aware that you want to see a new approach taken on the Matthew Stewart case. Don't be intimidated, it's really not hard to do at all. All of the contact information is listed right here. Simply write or call and say that you would like to see them back a renewed effort to reinvestigate the Matthew Stewart case. Tell them that you feel nine years is too long. It's time to try something different and to find ways to get fresh eyes on the case. If they hear from enough people, they'll be able to put pressure on the MPD and even the SBI to hopefully get things moving again.
You can send an email to the mayor and each commissioner, or leave them messages at the phone numbers listed.
