Back when this first happen I was told by my dad who had heard from someone at church that divorce papers where found in the home. Has anyone else heard this? Could certainly be one of the many rumors but just curious.

If this were to be true we may have a motive. Keep digging see what you can find out. I’ve never heard this but would not be surprised

I've also never heard this specific rumor, but that would certainly be important information to consider. If the rumor is true, the police must know about it. It would have been their search that found it.
It would be easy to say that if it were true that it makes Angel look more suspicious, but that's not necessarily the case. I can think of situations where she would have been considering divorce for something she became aware of that would also have put Matt at risk.
Again, as with all of this, if anyone has verifiable information from a reputable source, please share it. The more we know, the closer to the truth we're likely to get.

Your post was literally the first time I had seen anything about this being a possibility... it's time you called your Dad! He hates it when you don't call!

If we were to travel down this rabbit hole, normally there are only a couple primary reasons for divorce. Infidelity, financial issues, abuse of some sort, etc. From others posts there was no sign of problems, but could there be something that neither knew about the other until the end. Could either of them been having an affair, or in trouble financially with some bad people?

There was a post in this spot from percocet10 that I've moved to it's own thread entitled "Did Matt know something?" in the Questions & Theories section. I thought it was better suited as it's own conversation. Please look there for it. Thanks!

I just looked up the phone number for Iredell's District Court. I will call tomorrow and see if this information is available. If one of them filed but the divorce was never finalized, it's very possible there will be no documentation. I am going to assume I want them to search the year 2009, if that's an option?

I called Iredell County's Clerk of Court today at 704-832-6600,2,2. Their records are currently available back through 2005, due to a recent purge of everything prior to and including 2004. The person I spoke with searched for both Angela and/or Matthew Stewart divorce records. This includes completed divorce and also filing for divorce (not completed). There are no records on file for either party. The person I spoke with was helpful enough to search "all counties" in the event the divorce was filed outside of Iredell. There are no records for divorce filing or granting in NC for Angela or Matthew.

That's good stuff... thanks for doing the legwork on that! I imagine if one of the other had just gotten the paperwork ready to present to the other that there would be no record of that, though... so it's still possible that papers of some sort were present in the home. To be clear, we don't have any evidence of that at this point, and I believe the information at this point is strictly based on rumor. nicoleashley1754, have you heard any more details from your father?
