it is my understanding that this sketch was developed while matts wife was under hypnotism. has anyone else heard that? i believe at first she was unable to give any clues as to what the suspect(s) look(s)(ed) like.

Using hypnosis like that is pretty controversial. My limited reading on the subject suggests that experts are torn between this giving a more reliable description, or a less reliable description. The hypnosis makes you more suggestible so you are less likely to hold back things you weren't sure of, and more likely to go along with what's only a half memory. If you really did see something, it might help... if you didn't, it just gives your brain the permission to embellish what you might have imagined.
I get the feeling the police were literally trying everything they could think of in this case.

While one report states that the wife reported a masked intruder, the article accompanying the sketch states that she was injured and he was killed while the couples' three children slept. I would certainly place more confidence in available reports, video interviews, etc.
