A friend of mine went to school with Matt. She said they lost touch over the years, but she still considered him a friend and was shocked at his death. She found it suspicious from the start. She recommended the podcast to me. After listening to it, I have formed a theory. It's based on a hunch and my knowledge/experience with small, rural, southern towns with very religious people. This is not based on evidence. What if Matt was gay? It's not unusual for a southern religious man to lie to the people around him and even to himself about his sexuality. If something came out, it would be a huge embarrassment to the family and would be something that would haunt both is wife and children (especially with the amount of gossip that goes on in small towns). From a religious standpoint, it would be considered an abomination. It would be easier for him to be killed and for the family to collect the life insurance money than for them to take him to court, have the whole town know their business, and pay divorce lawyers. The mother-in-law is, in my opinion, the main suspect. This would be a legit motive. It would also explain why you're having trouble finding a motive - b/c you're looking to see if he has enemies or a sketchy past, when it reality it may be more about a dark secret. I ran this theory by my friend and her jaw dropped. She said she had never considered it, but from what she knew of Matt it was very possible that he could have been gay. The more she thought about it, the more it seemed to make sense. Again, this is based on no evidence. I wouldn't have even posted about it had she not thought there may be some truth to it. I would be interested to know more about his love life previous to his wife, and I would be interested to know if anyone else in his life thinks this could be a possibility.

If I didn’t know Matt personally I would say it was a good theory. I also went to Highschool with Matt and even hung out with him years after we graduated before he met Angel and I just can’t see it at all. I do believe that many people in the church know what happened to Matt. There are so many things pointing to his MIL and even his wife that if they aren’t involved someone did an great job at making it look like they did. I think that law enforcement knows what happened but there is not enough evidence to convict someone without a reasonable doubt.

Like I said, it's just a theory based off a hunch and really no evidence. I posted it to see if people who knew him thought there could be any truth to the gay theory. I agree the church should be looked at closely. I posted somewhere else about my knowledge and personal experience with some of the leaders there and there's definitely a cult vibe going on there. Police probably do know more than they're letting on and I would be shocked if the MIL wasn't involved. I think she's the best suspect so far.

I understand and respect your thought process, but no, Matt was not gay.

I thought the same thing, maybe the killer was someone he had a relationship with?
