MOORESVILLE, N.C. -- Almost a week after a fatal home invasion, police are returning to the scene and neighbors in the victim’s community are arming themselves with new security systems and dealing with their feelings of a lack of security.
Danielle Allen said her friend Angela Stewart, whose husband, Matt, died in the attack, told her, “She heard something, woke up, put her arms down to push herself up and the baby was in between them. She says she opened her eyes and he was standing over her. And all of a sudden she heard pop, pop, pop.”
Allen said Stewart told her the attack happened so fast she couldn’t see who did it. Allen said, “Matt woke up screaming ‘No. No. No.’ and he started wrestling with the guy. She grabbed Josiah and ran out of the house and ran to the neighbor’s house.”
Angela Stewart was shot in the arm, and when police arrived they found Matthew Stewart dead in the bedroom. But after searching the house, they couldn’t find anything stolen. They said the only description Angela Stewart could give them was that the gunman was tall.
Capt. Thomas Thompson, with Mooresville police, said, “We’ve processed the scene, collected the evidence. The evidence right now is being analyzed by the SBI. Hopefully the evidence will tell us something.”
Thompson said for the past week, detectives have worked roughly 16 hours a day rying to crack the case. Eyewitness News learned investigators are returning to the scene tonight at about the time the murder happened to look for more clues.
“Hopefully those people traveling the same time tonight, they were traveling the same time when this occurred. Maybe they saw something or can pass something along,” Thompson said.
