Hi, just signed up today and wanted to ask a few questions/share some observations.
I’m from the UK and have listened to all the episodes of the podcast over the last 24 hours and was hooked.
I know I’m late in joining in, so I might be covering old ground, but from what I’ve heard in the podcasts there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that Brenda (Angel’s mother) was directly involved in Matt’s murder. There are simply too many inconsistencies and anomalies surrounding her involvement.
I suppose the big question is how or why.
After hearing about her turning up at the house because of a bad feeling or premonition, I pretty quickly suspected her.
With that in mind, I am of the opinion that she organised the murder, but had second thoughts in the night and headed over there to try to stop it. When she arrived and found she was too late, she had to get in touch with the person responsible to find out whether the deed had been done, which led to offering cash to borrow Danielle’s phone.
Does anyone have a similar theory? Or can anyone give me reasons for and against this idea?

Does anyone have a similar theory? Or can anyone give me reasons for and against this idea? Welcome to the forum, and best wishes to my pals across the pond 🇬🇧! This thought has definitely crossed my mind... that what happened on June 9th was originally planned and then someone changed their minds. When I look at what I know (or have heard) about this murder, I’m always struck by this stark contrast... On the one hand, there are these “sloppy” elements of the crime like the clear signs of a serious struggle that took place, eye witnesses who escaped, and oddities like mother in law’s being there/arriving shortly after, and Angel’s leaving her 3 year old in the house, etc. all of which lead me to the suspect this crime was not planned (or at least not carefully planned). On the other hand, other facts and accounts seem to suggest careful planning. The one that stands out the most to me is the fact no shots were heard... what kind of person walks around with two guns, suppressors on each? Then there’s the claim that little to no DNA or psychical evidence was left behind, further suggesting either careful planning or ample time to cover up. Perhaps your theory, that there was a plan that later abandoned, might bridge this gap and explain why some aspects of the incident appear to be carried out smoothly while others clearly were not. Would love to hear others thoughts as well.

Thanks Freddie.
Yeah I can see both sides of it. I still think the police have A LOT to answer for with their handling of the case. What I’m getting at is that there MUST have been evidence but they made a mess of the crime scene. I mean, a man who was shot and stabbed multiple times would have bled heavily; there’s just no chance on earth that there wasn’t a footprint or handprint or even a hair in sight.
I would suggest that their notion that there was a hostage situation was what “spoiled” the scene. Obviously I don’t know how the SWAT team entered the house but I would guess there were a number of them and they went in fairly heavy-handedly. Whereas if police knew they were entering a closed murder scene they would (hopefully) been more careful to preserve evidence.
So in summary:
• Brenda planned/helped plan the murder • Murderer wasn’t necessarily careful/professional, hence the struggle • Murderer used silencers (pretty obvious requirement to go undetected) • Police ineptitude contaminated crime scene and allowed the killer a couple of hours to exit the scene.
Please do let me know if there’s anything I’ve missed!

I have been listening to the podcast and following along on this forum since the beginning but have never posted. I am also a resident of Mooresville, I have lived here since well before this happened and am around the same age as the victim. As such, though I didn't know Matt or Angel, I do know people that did. I also know people who lived in this neighborhood when this happened.
Here's my theory:
I think this was planned by Angel, and likely with her mother-in-law's help or knowledge. I believe there were two or three people who came to kill Matt (and I have suspicions as to who those people are) at the request of Angel. The timeline clearly doesn't work, so I think those people came much earlier and the crime took place prior to when Angel alleged. Due to the number, and multiple types of injuries Matt sustained, I can't see how it is possible that a struggle such as that would be over that quickly, and the perpetrator(s) escape without leaving a trail/trace in such a short amount of time.
If this happened earlier, Angel and the perp(s) would have had time to clean up, shoot Angel in the wrist, and clear out prior to her running across the street.
-Clean Up: Apparently there are no bloody footprints or an obvious trail of evidence showing where/how the perp(s) escaped. Perhaps they had a change of clothes, took a shower, etc. Perhaps there were bloody footprints but they were cleaned up. Maybe the fan in the doorway was drying carpet that was recently scrubbed....? Come on! How is this fan still standing in the doorway if not for the fact that it must have been placed there after! You think the perp(s) stepped over it on the way in and out? You think Angel - baby in tow - hurdled over it in her escape?? It is totally possible that (visible) evidence was cleaned up and why would the police have thought to spray luminol when there was an eye witness to explain what happened? Had they done that, I think they may have found something....
-Escape: I have heard various stories about the Mother-in-law's arrival. In one account, she was there then left and came back again. To get milk?? If that is true, did she pick the perp(s) up and take them out of there? This would explain the lack of a trail through the berm. Also, did she get there before the police or after? Again, I have heard both. Her car was in the driveway because it was impounded. Wouldn't that mean she would have had to have been there prior to the police? Would they not have had the road blocked with patrol cars? I don't understand how she could have gotten all the way into the drive way if they were already on scene. In either case, it seems clear that she saw Angel prior to going down to the lady's house where she offered money to use her phone. Correct me if I am wrong on this point. Two questions: Why not use the phone at the house where Angel is? Why leave your daughter (who is injured) and grandchild to go down the street??
To your point Freddie, I think this was planned but it was sloppy because 1) the perp(s) are not professionals and 2) maybe it was planned but not for this day and with Hannah being away they decided it was 'now or never'.

There is little doubt in my mind that this crime took place earlier than Angels horse manure story.
